Troubadors from the Cantigas de Santa Maria“Alfonso X El Sabio,” at the Iglesia de San Esteban in Murcia, Spain through January 31, “reunites for the first time in history all four copies of the Cantigas de Santa Maria and almost all of the alfonsí scriptorum, except for two works from the Vatican Library.”


The exhibition is divided into several sections that will show the cultural and political activity of the monarch on the peninsular and European context of his time. The first of these areas will be “The King, the Family, and Contemporary Monarchs, which will address a series of themes such as the symbols of royal power, lineage, and the monetary system.

At the same time, the “Royal Scriptorium” will explain, through manuscripts and audiovisual resources, the great works of Alfonso; the “Troubadour of the Virgin” section will exhibit for the first time all four copies of the “Cantigas de Santa Maria” of the 13th century; meanwhile in “The History” will feature a selection of Alfonso’s works, showing the monarch’s political intentions.

On the other side, the “Astronomy” section will explain the concepts of that science which existed in the epoch, all with images and objects; in “The Laws” one can see a brief panorama of justice in the 13th century, reflected in “Las Partidas” of the Wise King; and in the “Book of Games” will be recreated some of those games which were in vogue during the Middle Ages.

Finally, a section on “The Church” will enlighten visitors about the relationship that the monarch had with the institution of the church; in the section of “Music” will be a series of instruments and musical manuscripts; and finally “Murcia of Alfonso X” will demonstrate the transformation and adaptation of a territory of Islamic culture into Christian culture.
