I Medici: Een renaissance in papier - Isabelle de Borchgrave, at the Jubelparkmuseum of the Koninklijke Musea voor Kunst en Geschiedenis in Brussels through April 18, features nearly thirty costumes — all made of paper — based on 15th century Italian portraits.
My translation of the exhibition description:
For the realization of her artworks, Borchgrave cut, folded, glued, and hand-painted paper. The costumes are inspired by the Florentine fashion in vogue at the court of the Medici at the time of Lorenzo “il Magnifico” (1449-1492).She uses very realistic trompe-l’oeil techniques. The rich color of the draped fabrics, the impressive and sophisticated hairstyles and fine jewelry make the illusion complete. Isabelle de Borchgrave works as an art historian, performing thorough research and knowing perfectly how to emulate the silk, velvet, embroidery and lace of the past. The result is astounding: the past comes to life.
