Zwischen Himmel und Hölle: Kunst des Mittelalters von der Gotik bis Baldung Grien (Between Heaven and Hell Medieval Art from the Gothic Age to Baldung Grien), an exhibition of around 90 works from the Augustiner Museum (presently closed for renovation), is on display at the Bucerius Kunst Forum in Hamburg through January 1.
Here is my translation from the exhibition description:
Almost all of the exhibition’s paintings, stained glass, and sculpture dates from the period before 1500. The principal pieces of the presentation include the oldest exhibit of a South German sculpture of Christ in the 12th century, the triptych Passion altarpiece of the Master of the Housebook (active 1470-1505), the enormous sandstone figure of a Virgin of Mercy of about 1360 from the Freiburg Cathedral and three paintings by Hans Baldung Grien (1484/85-1545) …The exhibition also reflects the lifestyle of medieval man, seeing himself between heaven and hell, between salvation and damnation. A large painting from the workshop of Martin Schaffner shows in a Judgment the alternative of paradise and purgatory.
